What Is Viton and FKM?
Viton is the brand name for a family of synthetic rubber and fluoropolymer elastomers originally developed by DuPont (now Chemours). Technically, Viton belongs to the family of FKM elastomers—fluorinated, carbon-based rubbers known for their exceptional resistance to heat, chemicals, and oils.
The terms Viton, FKM, and FPM are often used interchangeably:
Viton: Trademarked brand name.
FKM: The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) designation.
FPM: The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) designation.
Despite the different names, they all refer to the same category of high-performance fluoroelastomers.
Key Advantages of Viton Seals and FKM Material
• Outstanding Heat Resistance
Viton seals and gaskets can withstand continuous temperatures of up to 200–250°C, and short-term exposure to even higher temperatures. This makes them ideal for use in engines, exhaust systems, and industrial machinery where thermal stability is essential.
• Superior Chemical Resistance
FKM seals offer exceptional resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemicals, including fuels, oils, acids, and solvents. This makes them the preferred choice in chemical processing plants, oil refineries, and fuel systems.
• Excellent Compression Set Resistance
Viton O-rings maintain their shape and sealing performance over time, even under constant pressure and fluctuating temperatures. This minimizes the risk of leaks and failures in critical systems.
• Weather and Ozone Resistance
FKM materials exhibit outstanding resistance to ozone, UV rays, and other environmental conditions, making them suitable for outdoor and aerospace applications.
• Low Permeability
Viton seals are less permeable than many other elastomers, helping to reduce the loss of gases and fluids over time—an important feature in fuel handling and vacuum systems.
Applications of Viton Seals, Gaskets, and O-Rings
Because of their durability and reliability, Viton gaskets, FKM seals, and O-rings are commonly found in:
• Automotive industry – in fuel systems, turbochargers, and transmission components
• Aerospace applications – where high altitude and temperature resistance are crucial
• Chemical processing plants – where seals must resist aggressive solvents and corrosive media
• Oil and gas industry – including downhole and offshore applications
• Pharmaceutical and food production – using special food-grade versions of FKM material
Viton vs. Other Elastomers
Compared to standard rubber materials such as NBR (nitrile) or EPDM, FKM seals deliver far better performance in challenging environments. While NBR is sufficient for general oil resistance, it degrades at high temperatures and when exposed to many chemicals. EPDM, though excellent for water and steam, lacks oil and chemical resistance. Viton fills this performance gap and is the top choice for high-demand sealing tasks.
Customization and Variants
FKM materials come in several grades and formulations to suit different industries. Low-temperature Viton, for instance, remains flexible down to -40°C, while other types focus on better fuel resistance or higher elasticity. This versatility allows engineers to select the perfect Viton gasket or O-ring for any application.
Whether you’re looking for robust Viton O-rings, reliable Viton seals, or durable FKM gaskets, fluoroelastomers like Viton provide unmatched performance in harsh environments. Their ability to resist heat, chemicals, pressure, and environmental stress makes them indispensable across many industrial sectors. As demands for safety, efficiency, and durability continue to rise, so does the importance of high-performance sealing materials like FKM.
